Policy Exchange has written extensively about the strategic importance of UK sovereignty over the Chagos Islands and about why surrendering the Islands to Mauritius would be a bad mistake.
See below for a snapshot of Policy Exchange’s very extensive body of work on this important subject, since October 2023, a body of work that covers the full range of relevant legal, strategic, environmental and historical considerations.
Professor Richard Ekins KC (Hon) – Head of the Judicial Power Project at Policy Exchange – just gave evidence to the International Relations and Defence Committee on ‘Implications of the transfer of sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago’
Policy Exchange Senior Fellow Dr Yuan Yhi Zhu also gave Oral Evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights for a Non-Inquiry session examining the human rights implications of the UK-Mauritius Agreement on Wednesday 4th February 2026.
During this session, the Committee examined the human rights implications of the UK-Mauritius Agreement and focussed on the extent to which the Agreement complies with the UK’s obligations under international law to respect the rights of Chagossians.
