Click here to listen to the New Statesman’s New Times podcast, featuring Professor John Bew — head of Policy Exchange’s Britain in the World project.
Professor Bew argues that, despite the “America first” rhetoric in the Trump campaign, we will not see an isolationist American foreign policy under the next President. Although the Trump doctrine has not yet formed, he suggests that Trump will be highly active on the international scene but that we may be entering a nineteenth-century style in in the international arena in which characterised by high-profile summits and an emphasis of deal-making – and it may even be that Henry Kissinger’s foreign policy is back in fashion again. Against this backdrop, Britain needs more dynamism in its foreign policy and a clear-eyed view of the national interest.
