About this Event

The Nottingham Tragedy: Policies to prevent future killings by psychiatric patients

On 13 June 2023 Valdo Calocane, who had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and had previous interactions with health services and the police, killed three people – and seriously injured three others in Nottingham city centre.

How could this attack – and similar assaults – have been prevented? How much of a wider problem is there with the way the crime and justice system approaches mental health issues? Did the criminal justice and health systems respond differently because of perceptions around race and ethnicity? What policies are now needed to keep the public safe from similar attacks in future?
