Greening the economy – not ‘green economy’

We need growth and we need to become greener. But is this is what is meant by those promoting ‘green growth’ and the ‘green economy’?

The current policy of subsidising select UK ‘green’ industries is based not on the subsidies for such selected sectors being the best way to reduce carbon emissions, but that a principal objective of these public subsidies is to promote UK growth, exports and employment.

This Research Note explores the likely impact of such ‘green growth’ policies, both for economic growth and emissions reduction.

Note: This Research Note originally appeared as a chapter in our earlier report Looking to the Future of Growth.
