The Future of the Right project at Policy Exchange is shaping the forward-looking platform for the centre-right in the United Kingdom. The project brings together leading thinkers, policymakers, and practitioners – irrespective of partisan allegiance – to confront the social, economic, and geopolitical dilemmas underpinning the central question in British politics today: can the right govern again at Westminster, and if so, how?
The project is examining a wide range of policy areas including but not limited to immigration, the economy, welfare and reform of government. It is considering not only the political context, but cultural, social and professional trends. It seeks to work across the ‘broad right’ in the UK, liaising with elected office-holders at every level, as well as the variety of influences which shape current thinking on the right – particularly those on social media, using new forms of communication. It is honest about the fact that the right is divided – but understands that division as an opportunity to explore new perspectives.
The Future of the Right project is rooted in deep understanding of the historical traditions of conservatism in Britain, but unafraid to ask the pressing questions: how does the right need to think and organise itself differently for the challenges of today? In a split party political landscape, what are the opportunities and threats? How should the right respond to new developments on the left? And most frankly of all: what were the failures, missed opportunities and errors of 14 years of centre-right government?
