with Lieutenant General (Ret.) I.-B. Chun, Former Commander, South Korea Special Warfare Command

Lieutenant General I.-B. Chun is one of the most decorated officers in South Korea’s military history. He retired in July 2016 as deputy commander of the First South Korean Army – after commanding the country’s Special Warfare Command from 2013.

Throughout his career he has worked closely with the American military, serving in a variety of roles including as Deputy Chief of Staff for the Korean-American Combined Forces Command (CFC), Deputy Director for Strategic Planning at the Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, overseer of the Operational Control Transition Group, and Director of US affairs at the Korean Ministry of National Defense. He also served as Assistant Chief of Staff (Operations) for Ground Component Command; and worked for the Korean Army Chief of Staff’s Office on military diplomacy.

Lt. Gen. Chun lived for several years in the United States, and along his PhD he also holds a Master of Science degree in Military Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. He is now a Visiting Fellow at Brookings’ Center for East Asia Policy Studies. His awards include three US Legions of Merit, the United States Special Operations Command Medal and the US Bronze Star Medal. In early 2017 he served as national security adviser on then-candidate Moon Jae-in’s campaign staff.
