A response to attacks on Churchill’s life and legacy

November 8, 2025

This report by Lord (Andrew) Roberts of Belgravia – one of Sir Winston Churchill’s leading biographers – identifies how an increasingly influential new-transatlantic brand of right-wing revisionists are denigrating Churchill to justify their new brand of isolationism in the US. It argues that revisionist right-wing attacks on Churchill are designed to rewrite history and rehabilitate appeasement to justify new Western isolationism, including withdrawing support for Ukraine, and warns that this pact from the fringe left and fringe right to distort the legacy of Winston Churchill that must not be exported into UK politics.

Claims made against Churchill by his critics on the revisionist right include that he, rather than Nazi Germany, was the primary aggressor of World War Two, that it would have been better for Britain to do a deal with Hitler in 1940 that would have left the Nazis in control of Europe and that Churchill’s wartime leadership cost Britain her empire. The report explains how these claims are baseless and rely on distortion of the historical facts and the chronology of events.
