Written by the UK’s leading Iran scholar, Professor Ali Ansari FRSE, British Policy and the Iran Crisis examines how the ongoing crisis has exposed serious weaknesses in Britain’s strategic thinking, preparedness and military capacity toward Iran and the Gulf more widely. The report diagnoses a Whitehall trapped by institutional inertia, depleted Persian expertise and an overriding focus on the legal and technical dimensions of Iran’s nuclear programme. This has left Britain reacting to events rather than shaping them, mistaking “masterly inactivity” for clear-eyed strategy while its regional influence and its credibility in the eyes of key regional allies steadily recede.
To reverse this decline, Britain must rebuild its Persian-language, historical and regional expertise and restore long-term strategic thinking to the heart of government. Diplomatic influence must be backed by hard power required to defend Britain’s Gulf allies, uphold freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and work with European partners to ensure Iran’s nuclear ambitions are constrained.
In a Foreword to the report, former Security Minister Rt Hon Tom Tugendhat MBE VR MP writes “No country can opt out of history, we can only opt out of defending our interests. Over the past decades, Britain has tested this by hiding its head like an ostrich…The British Government has demonstrated a failure of strategic thought, a failure to think historically, contextually and for the long term, leaving us enfeebled, our allies doubtful, and our enemies hopeful…Prof Ansari has written an indispensable report; its warnings deserve to be heard at the highest levels of Government and acted upon.”
