London boroughs back common standards-led data approach

“Eddie Copeland, Policy Exchange’s head of technology policy, said that while open standards and common ways of using and recording council data were vital to establishing more efficient shared service work, local government was a long way from realising these ambitions.

“‘Every local authority, entirely understandably, has procured different IT systems over the course of many years. So they all have their unique silos of legacy architecture,’ he said.

“Copeland argued these silos created problems for developers working to build apps, services or websites for a council when designed to plug into their existing systems, with developers required to start from scratch to produce the same product for another authority’s infrastructure.”
