Sluggish growth, uncontrolled immigration and a growing benefits bill: successive Governments have failed to overcome the country’s biggest challenges. The State has been captured by ‘stakeholder’ groups who lobby for sectional interests, not the common good. Quangos, courts and overreaching legislation at home and abroad raise impediments to every aspect of public policy. And as successive Prime Ministers with large majorities have found, the Ministers who occupy our Great Offices of State increasingly pull levers, but find that these levers are connected to nothing.

‘Project 2029: A Plan to Reshape Britain’ is Policy Exchange’s new programme of work to set out how a Government of any colour could overcome these challenges and put Britain back on the right path. Working on a cross-party basis, we intend, through a series of reports and events, to develop a comprehensive plan of action that a Government could implement to put elected politicians back in the driving seat.

This launch event will set the stage for the programme, highlighting the scale of Britain’s challenges and why change is needed.
