Recent years have seen a sustained and significant coarsening of the tone in British politics. Not a week seems to go by without fresh reports of an MP, or some other high profile figure receiving vile abuse or being subject to threats and intimidation. Few would dispute that the language of political discourse seems to grow less civil and more crude. Why is this happening? What are the consequences? And what should be done about it?
To consider these issues – and to analyse the new age of incivility – Policy Exchange is creating a Civility Hub. This workstream will monitor the new politics and consider possible remedies for reinforcing the norms that underpin a vibrant, robust, yet civil democratic polity.
To mark the launch of this project, we have produced a survey that shows the contours of the ‘Age of Incivility’ – and we are delighted to welcome several of those most affected by this worrying trend in political life for a panel discussion to explore this issue. We hope that this event can initiate a debate and kick-start an extended conversation about the appropriate parameters of discourse in public life.
