The Future of Drugs Policy: Dr Kevin Sabet in conversation with Victoria Atkins MP
Oct 19, 2015
Former US Presidential adviser Dr Kevin Sabet will be discussing the future of drugs policy in conversation with Victoria Atkins MP at a Policy Exchange event.
Dr Sabet was senior adviser to President Obama’s drug control director, having previously advised both President George Bush Jr’s and President Bill Clinton’s administrations. He is the only drug policy staffer to have ever served as a political appointee in Democrat and Republican administrations.
Dr Sabet – who wrote a widely acclaimed book on drugs policy, called Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana – runs Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM). SAM seeks to align marijuana policy and attitudes about the drug with 21st-century science, which continues to show how marijuana use adversely affects the mind and body.
Victoria Atkins MP was elected to represent Louth and Horncastle at the 2015 election. Ms Atkins read law at Cambridge University and became a criminal barrister, specialising in prosecuting serious organised crime. She is one of only 30 advocates in England and Wales appointed to the Attorney General’s Regulatory Panel and the Serious Fraud Office’s List of specialist fraud prosecutors. Before her election to the House of Commons in May, Ms Atkins stood as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire in 2012. She was elected to the Home Affairs Select Committee in July 2015.
