About the Event
In response to a shortage of good quality homes after the War, successive UK governments supported the building of New Towns across the country. Ministers envisioned places “with a sense of beauty, culture and civic pride.” Today there are over two million people living in New Towns.
In this panel debate we ask whether the time for a modern generation of New Towns has come again and what measures can be taken to support them being built in ways that are beautiful and affordable. The event follows Policy Exchange’s latest housing report, Tomorrow’s Places, which calls for a new government Department for Growth to work with the Mayor of London and partner directly with developers to build 15 new towns in London’s commuter belt.
